Cannabinoids in neuroinflammatory disorders: Focusing on multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons, and Alzheimers diseases

Abstract: The medicinal properties of cannabis and cannabinoid-derivative are entirely investigated and known. In addition, the identification of psychotropic plant cannabinoids has led to more studies regarding the cannabinoid system and its therapeutic features in the treatment and management of clinical symptoms of neuroinflammatory disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinsons disease (PD), and Alzheimers disease (AD). In fact, cannabinoid agonists are able to control and regulate inflammatory responses. In… Show more

“…It is also used to help with sleep and to improve appetite. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in using Cannabis to treat epilepsy 9 11 and multiple sclerosis 12 16 . The two major classes of natural products found in Cannabis are cannabinoid and terpenoid compounds, both of which have been reported to possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.…”

“…29 Examples of neuroinflammatory diseases include multiple sclerosis, AD, and PD. 30 Gem can suppress the expression of pro-inflammatory molecules in human primary microglia via activation of PPARα. The studies suggest that Gem could have potential therapeutic value in several neuroinflammatory and NDs since it regulates both microglial activation and inflammatory gene expression in a PPARβ dependent manner, suggesting that Gem may represent a promising treatment for these conditions.…”

“…In general, bioactive lipids in cell signaling include plant-derived compounds such as cannabinoids (terpeno-phenol compounds also known as phytocannabinoids) [ 1 , 2 ], terpenoids (including sterols) [ 3 , 4 ], carotenoids and phenolics (including flavonoids) [ 5 , 6 ]. In addition, our cells produce lipids endowed with biological activity in signal transduction, the best characterized being derivatives of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).…”
