Cannibalism in discrete-time predator–prey systems

Abstract: In this study, we propose and investigate a two-stage population model with cannibalism. It is shown that cannibalism can destabilize and lower the magnitude of the interior steady state. However, it is proved that cannibalism has no effect on the persistence of the population. Based on this model, we study two systems of predator-prey interactions where the prey population is cannibalistic. A sufficient condition based on the nontrivial boundary steady state for which both populations can coexist is derived. … Show more

“…Solis et al considered the effect of prey cannibalism in a multi component structured model, via integer differential equations [31]. Chow and Jang investigated a structured discrete model with prey cannibalism finding that it may either stabilize or destabilize, depending on cannibalism rates and various other parameters [7]. Also, Zhang et al considered a three species structured ODE model, with structure and cannibalism in the prey.…”

“…However, depending on model structure and parameter regimes, cannibalism is also seen to destabilize [8] in some cases. Various other classes of models such as integro-differential equation models, as well as discrete models have also been investigated [7,31,12].…”

“…Adult population has to compete for resources to reproduce when population size or density is larger. Correspondingly, juvenile population birth rate is a function of adults' density and remains bounded when adults' size is large due to limited resources [20]. This densitydependent regulator has been found in beetles, tribolium, copepods, scorpions, several fish species and even crows by Polis [21].…”

“…A detailed survey of the current and past mathematical literature on cannibalism shows that various types of predator-prey models have been investigated [6,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. Most works in the literature consider cannibalism in the predator species.…”
