Capabilities of photoplethysmography as a method for screening of cardiovascular system pathology

Abstract: Currently, vegetative dysfunction considered to be one of principal mechanisms in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular pathology, which causes a cascade of events leading to changes in the properties and a structure of vascular wall. This review article contains literature from various databases (Russian science citation index, PubMed, Google Shcolar, Scopus). It presents the methods for assessing vegetative imbalance. In particular, the method of photoplethysmography (PPGV) is considered for recording periodic … Show more

“…В настоящее время в научной и клинической практике для изучения состояния периферического кровотока применяется фотоплетизмография (ФПГ) "на просвет" [16]. В основе данного метода лежит регистрация пульсовой волны (ПВ) объема с помощью оптического датчика, который устанавливается на ногтевой фаланге пальцев конечностей.…”

“…At the same time, the methods of the non-contact determination of SpO 2 -oxygen saturation of blood using a video camera have been developing since 2005 [ 13 , 14 ]. Currently, the diagnostic capabilities of the methods of the contact and non-contact PPGIs are expanding and include not only the assessment of the heart rate, determination of the vascular wall properties, the level of blood oxygen saturation [ 15 19 ], but also the determination of the pulse wave propagation time, as well as its spatial distribution over the skin surface [ 20 , 21 ].…”

“…Besides, in addition to the described methods, for an indirect assessment of the autonomic regulation functional activity via spectral analysis of the distal vascular bed oscillations, there is also the method of a digital photoplethysmography [5]. Previously mentioned high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) oscillations in the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal are of particular interest, since they show their potential for the clinical practice [6]. The genesis of HF oscillations is traditionally associated with the mechanical effect of respiration on the peripheral blood flow [7].…”
