Capacity Expansions with Bundled Supplies of Attributes: An Application to Server Procurement in Cloud Computing

Abstract: Problem definition: The recent surge in demand for cloud services has posed a significant capacity-expansion problem for cloud infrastructure providers. Although the growth of demand for capacity attributes—for example, CPU and RAM—is disproportionate, these attributes are often provided in preconfigured packages (cluster-types), and the fixed ratio of attributes in a package does not match with the time-varying ratio of demand. We analyze a class of expansion policies to determine the timing and magnitude of … Show more

“…Since the world entered the age of Industry 4.0, new digital technologies that shape production and operation management have become rife. For instance, deep learning and artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (Kumar et al., 2018; Zhou and Wan, 2022), cloud computing (Arbabian et al., 2021), and blockchain (Babich and Hilary, 2020) have had transformative impacts on many industries (Dai et al., 2020). Realizing the influence of these new technological innovations, scholars have called for more research in these domains.…”

“…When production and operations management entered the era of Industry 4.0, innovations of digital technologies and automation technologies, such as cloud computing (Arbabian et al 2021), AI and machine learning (Simester et al 2020), blockchain (Babich and Hilary 2020), data analytics (Choi et al 2018), and autonomous vehicles (Naumov et al 2020), have reshaped many industries (Dai et al 2020) and have caught scholars' attention.…”

“…To explore this challenge, Arbabian et al. (2021) analyze a two‐resource capacity‐expansion problem where a cloud infrastructure provider adopts two server configurations with different CPU/RAM ratios, which differs from the single‐resource capacity model in many studies.…”
