Transient stability and supply disturbances are common yet unwelcome phenomena in power distribution systems, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The growing demand for greater reliability and dependability in power delivery has aroused the interest of researchers and renewed the pursuit of advanced technological solutions for fault detection and location determination at medium and low-voltage levels. The length of the distribution network typically ranges from hundreds to thousands of kilometers. In this regard, the management of distribution networks, including the identification of faulty segments, is a significant recurrent challenge facing power-system operators. With the ever-expanding distribution network and regulatory demands for service reliability, the challenge for network operators is daunting. However, the deployment of IoT technologies in the energy distribution infrastructure would significantly accelerate the detection and location of faults, thus transforming the electricity delivery service into one that is responsive, communicative, attractive, and robust. This study proposes, designs, and implements a reasonably priced LoRaWAN-based IoT platform for monitoring distribution networks. The study was conducted in Nakuru County, Kenya on an actual and active distribution network owned and managed by Kenya Power Company. Experimental results showed that a trigger is generated at the network-monitoring center in about 100 msec of the occurrence of a fault on the distribution network, thus enabling quick, prompt, and immediate commencement of reparative action. Furthermore, practical evaluation has shown that this platform is well adapted for the context of developing countries where budgetary constraints and cost prohibitions hinder the upgrade of the legacy grid into fully-fledged smart entities.

Food losses in the cool chain, which are mostly caused by temperature deviations, can be reduced by remote monitoring of transport conditions. The project ‘Intelligent Container’ was begun 15 years ago to provide the necessary sensor system, communication and automated evaluation of data. If transport and delivery planning are adjusted according to the actual quality or the predicted remaining shelf life, more products arrive with sufficient quality at the customers. This paper summarizes the project results and highlights current trends in industrial application and research, such as commercial remote container monitoring and standards for data exchange, sub-GHz communication, the increasing availability of biological and computational fluid dynamics models and digital twins. Open research topics include the development of specialized sensors. To overcome obstacles hindering the industrial application of sensor quality monitoring, we suggest a gradual approach, with lower company resources required for the first action points. Food losses can be reduced, even if the complete system, including permanent remote access and adaptive stock rotation, is not applied.

Summary With the quick progress of wireless technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT) has been recognized as the main part of daily people's lives that makes their life more convenient by utilizing a diverse range of smart devices. Over the last decade, various useful and forthcoming application fields have been developed by taking advantage of the IoT concept. In this regard, LPWAN technologies such as LoRa, Sigfox, and NB‐IoT play an important role in advancing. These technologies are suitable wireless communication protocols for battery‐powered IoT objects that enable long‐distance communication in low‐power devices at a low operation cost. Some review papers have investigated the LPWAN technology in the IoT from different perspectives. However, the lack of detailed and systematic study outlining the role of these technologies in different IoT applications is very clear. Consequently, this gap inspired us to write the current study. The current works are classified into three main classes, including smart city, home automation, and smart healthcare. Besides, the involved models in the smart city group are categorized into five subgroups, including smart monitoring, smart metering, air pollution, smart agriculture, and smart parking. The selected works are reviewed, and their main features, including main idea, coverage range, sensor types, processing board, frequency band, communication protocols, power consumption analysis, and achievement, are specified. Generally, our main aim is to describe the challenging problems of applying LPWAN to various IoT applications, specify the efficient models, and recommend some hints for upcoming studies.
