Capacity of a broad-crested chute spillway with a curved outline in plan

Abstract

The capacity of a broad-crested spillway with curved outline in plan was determined for a free-surface spillway at different Lower-Kamsk and Saratov hydrostations of the integrated type.* The Lower-Kamsk Hydrostation consists of nine two-unit sections; in each section are two bottom pressure turbine units and three free-surface spillways (Fig. 1). Within the limits of the curved walls, in a massive separate chamber, is placed the turbine shaft. The symmetrical design of the spillway in plan permitted the investigation in the laboratory of a model of a single turbine unit (Fig. 1), in which the average free-surface spillway was divided by a plane surface along the axis of symmetry, giving a half-width dimension. Experiments were conducted on enclosed pressure spillways. The surface Of the spillway model varied from 14 to 33 cm. These heads are responsible for the relative length of the crest c/H from 9.95 to 4.2; the relative crest width in the key section bkey/H varied from 1.36 to 0.06, the relative height p/H from 4.91 to 2.08.As the experimental data show, the character of operation of the spillways investigated and the coefficients of discharge are considerably different from those given in
