Capillary electrophoresis with on-line enrichment for the analysis of biological samples

Abstract: “On‐Line” preconcentration in capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a good strategy to overcome the low concentration sensitivity of the technique, which is the main limitation when trace‐level compounds are to be determined in complex matrices such as biological samples. Here we discuss the use of at‐, on‐, and in‐line preconcentration procedures in combination with CE in the analysis of biological fluids. The preconcentration strategies discussed are classified into two groups depending on the mechanism involved… Show more

“…15 In order to reduce these deficiencies, two strategies could be used: (i) on-line sample preconcentration methods, which are cheap, and can improve the sensitivity in several orders of magnitude, 16 however these are arduous and diminish the analytical frequency. These disadvantages make this method inappropriate for large volumes; (ii) the use of the laser-induced fluorescence detection system would be another way to improve the detectability and sensitivity of the method.…”

“…In addition, various off-line and on-line concentration methods as well as electrophoretic stacking procedures have been developed. CE with on-line enrichment for the analysis of biological samples by chromatographic and electrophoretic preconcentration [103] as well as general sample stacking strategies [104,105] have been reviewed recently. Chiral CE in bioanalysis has also been summarized previously [12][13][14][15][16].…”

“…SPE-CE is efficient at concentrating hydrophobic compounds but it has some limitations such as loss of resolution, peak broadening, peak tailing and the increased backpressure that disturbs the electroosmotic flow (EOF) [5]. These limitations can be partially solved by mPC due to the limited volume of solvent required for elution that avoids the adverse effects of the large volumes of organic solvents on CE.…”
