Capillary Hemangioblastoma: An Immunohistochemical Study

Abstract: Previous studies using immunohistochemical methods to determine the presence of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and Factor VIII-related antigen (FVIIIR:Ag) in stromal cells of capillary hemangioblastomas have yielded conflicting results with respect to the possible astrocytic and endothelial origins of these cells. This study included Ulex europaeus I lectin (UEAI), a more sensitive marker of endothelial cells. Antibodies were also used as markers of pericytes and a variety of markers were employed to i… Show more

“…Our immunohistochemical results are widely comparable with those of most human hemangioblastomas [7][8][9][10][11]14,20 and with the case diagnosed by the AFIP. 1 Despite many investigations, the histogenesis of the tumor and particularly the origin of the stromal cells is still uncertain.…”

“…2,9,10,14,20 Endothelial markers (FVIIIrag and Ulex europeus I lectin) have reacted only with endothelial cells. 8,9,20 Although occasional positivity of stromal cells has been found with some histiocytic markers (␣1-antitrypsin, ␣1-antichymotrypsin, and lysozyme), these findings did not support a histiocytic origin. 8,9 Occasional positivity of stromal cells for GFAP has been interpreted as the result of entrapment of surrounding nervous tissue and reactive astrocytes.…”
