Capsaicin treatment of idiopathic rhinitis: The new panacea?

Abstract: The management of patients with perennial nonallergic or idiopathic rhinitis is difficult. Diagnosis and treatment are hampered by several factors. First, the diagnosis is made by exclusion of other nasal diseases. As a consequence, idiopathic rhinitis is not defined according to clear-cut criteria. A commonly accepted phenotype of idiopathic rhinitis does not exist. Second, the pathophysiology of idiopathic rhinitis is not yet fully elucidated. In contrast with allergic rhinitis, inflammation does not appear … Show more

“…Here, we use capsaicin to elucidate toxicological phenomena associated with TRPV1 activation in lung cells. Capsaicin is used clinically to induce cough (Morice et al, 2001) and to treat rhinitis (van Rijswijk and Gerth van Wijk, 2006). However, numerous case reports have described adverse respiratory effects and death in humans following exposures to concentrated capsaicinoid aerosols (Heck, 1995;Steffee et al, 1995;Billmire et al, 1996).…”

“…The NANIPER patients are also highly sensitive and a response can be provoked with cold dry air that has similarities to skier's nose in AR patients in the Alps. Complete desensitization with capsaisin is effective treatment for at least 1 year . It would be interesting to study ASIC3 expression in the nasal mucosa of NANIPER patients.…”
