Capsule Endoscopy in Children

Abstract: Since its clearance for use throughout the world, capsule endoscopy (CE) has become an important diagnostic tool, helping us to understand and document both normal and abnormal findings in the small intestine, especially in children, since CE usually can be employed without sedation or radiation. The indications in children and adults are similar, though their relative frequencies are different, with evaluation of potential and known inflammatory bowel disease the most common in the pediatric population, with … Show more

“…Video capsule endoscopy (wireless capsule endoscopy) is established in paediatric practice for patients with IBD. Diagnostic uncertainty following biopsy, strong suspicion of small bowel disease and a drive towards better characterisation of disease extent have all increased the use of this technique 13. It is possible to perform this examination in children as young as 2 years of age.…”

A dummy, or patency, capsule can be administered prior to the video capsule to ensure this will not be retained by a stricture.…”

“…There is extensive pediatric experience with VCE; the established indications include gastrointestinal bleeding and small bowel Crohn's Disease. Small intestinal polyps are detected in 8% of VCE in pediatric patients overall, mainly in older children (>10 years age) with PJS 3 . Several studies have reported the use of VCE in adult and pediatric PJS, including favorable comparison with other radiologic modalities.…”

“…1 It has been increasingly applied for the investigation of various other conditions, such as suspected or established Crohn's disease (CD), inherited polyposis syndromes, celiac disease, and so on. 1,2 While bowel preparation is an issue to be discussed, colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) has been considered as a painless and radiation-free imaging modality alternative to ileocolonoscopy for the screening of colorectal tumorous lesions, based on the results confirming favorable diagnostic yield of colorectal polyps using the second-generation CCE. 3 In addition, possible application of CCE for ulcerative colitis has been recently discussed.…”

“…Among them, small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) enables complete visualization of the small intestine noninvasively, and the procedure has been recommended as the first choice of modality in patients with obscure gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding 1 . It has been increasingly applied for the investigation of various other conditions, such as suspected or established Crohn’s disease (CD), inherited polyposis syndromes, celiac disease, and so on 1,2 . While bowel preparation is an issue to be discussed, colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) has been considered as a painless and radiation‐free imaging modality alternative to ileocolonoscopy for the screening of colorectal tumorous lesions, based on the results confirming favorable diagnostic yield of colorectal polyps using the second‐generation CCE 3 .…”
