The present study was done during 2019-20 to assess the current fisheries status of Dal lake in terms of species diversity, trophic status, trends and patterns in fish catch, the lake’s physicochemical properties and its management. Shannon-Wiener index used to calculate the species diversity was 2.08 with the species evenness value of 2.19. The water quality analysis revealed that the lake is highly polluted due to various anthropogenic activities like sewage influx, vegetable cultivation, tourism activities, etc. The lake is dominated by omnivorous fishes followed by herbivores and carnivores. The compound annual growth rate results from 1989 to 2019 for capture fisheries showed the positive growth rate of 0.23. A lack of coordination between the different governing bodies has led the Dal lake to its brim of death. It is recommended to restore by controlling the sewage influx and weed growth. Additionally, the existing pattern of governance and management needs to be modified.

The study investigates the livelihood conditions, vulnerability, and resilience of the Dal Lake fishers and their readiness and strength to withstand climate shocks and vulnerabilities. The study was conducted in 2019-2020 in three fishing villages of Dal Lake Kashmir, where the livelihood and vulnerability of fisheries-based livelihoods were assessed through a composite index development approach. The fishers of Dal Lake are moderately vulnerable to climate variability and changes. The status of the livelihood capitals of the fishers reveals that most of the capitals are of moderate type, however, the financial capital is poor horizontally among all the fishing villages. It was also found that the socio economic conditions and resilience of the people are in very poor condition. The fisheries related activities and policies are being side-lined because of giving more importance to tourism. The management of the lake is shared between the Fisheries & Tourism departments, and the Jammu and Kashmir Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (power). However, lack of coordination, less availability of resources, less priority to the fisheries sector, and lack of accountability hindered the desired outcomes. Proper management of the lake, coordination between the key stakeholders and fishers is very important and can be achieved through network governance.

Rural tourism plays a significant role in fostering sustainable growth in rural areas by leveraging their natural, cultural, and heritage resources to attract visitors while preserving the environment and supporting local communities. Sustainable rural tourism development involves a balance between economic viability, environmental integrity, and socio-cultural authenticity. Rural tourism helps to promote sustainable living and can be seen as a potential means to support local economy and growth, i.e. inclusive. 70% of Indian economy is built on agricultural and allied activities which establish a larger prospect for rural tourism. The government has thus realized the true potential of rural India. In this chapter, an attempt is made to research the capacity of rural tourism in Meghalaya; thereby analyzing role of public private departments, community participation, and various aspects for sustainable rural growth. This research examines the opportunities and challenges of Meghalaya that will retain the potential of economic growth capacity in terms of rural tourism.
