Capturing the fingerprint of Etna volcano activity in gravity and satellite radar data

Abstract: Long-term and high temporal resolution gravity and deformation data move us toward a better understanding of the behavior of Mt Etna during the June 1995 – December 2011 period in which the volcano exhibited magma charging phases, flank eruptions and summit crater activity. Monthly repeated gravity measurements were coupled with deformation time series using the Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) technique on two sequences of interferograms from ERS/ENVISAT and COSMO-SkyMed satellite… Show more

“…This possible control of the faults on the degassing pathway has been also observed in other volcanoes, e.g., at Mt. Etna (Del Negro et al, 2013) and Campi Flegrei (Chiodini & Frondini, 2001), and, at a broader scale, along continental rifts (Lee et al, 2016).…”

“…The applied decomposition method is performed on the LOS time-series [49], and is based on the consideration that over our study area the SAR data were acquired quite regularly from both orbits. Accordingly, the combination has been carried out on ascending and descending data that are temporally as close as possible each other.…”

“…The 44 lava fountain (LF) episodes at the NSEC between 2011 and 2013 were preceded by deep magma uprising (Del Negro et al, 2013). We distinguished three main phases, separated by two long eruptive pauses ( Table 1).…”
