“…In addition, these five samples (X1, X2, X3, X4 and X5) were subjected to standard X-ray diffraction as a natural powder pattern as well as clay thin sections. This mineralogical characterization of marl formations allows to see if the material is more prone to swelling-shrinkage or landslides hazard (Medjnoun et al 2014;Faleh et al 2002;Jian et al 2009;Djerbal et al 2012;Regmi et al 2012;etc. ).…”

“…Several cases of damages have occurred in recent years in many parts of the country (e.g., Medea, Batna, Tlemcen, Oran). [6][7][8] Soil-structure interaction is assured by the foundations, which have the important role of transferring loads to the supporting soils. For this reason, when studying the foundation swelling soils of a construction, should interest with their mechanical behavior under the applied loads, also take into account that swelling strain of clay soils occur over time as a function of soil properties [9] (e.g., mineralogy, structure, suction, plasticity and dry density, permeability), also the environmental conditions (e.g., moisture variations, climate, vegetation).…”

“…In the absence of external mechanical stress, free drying or wetting leads to changes in soil volume, water content as well as degree of saturation, and that may result in settlements or heave of structures. This hydric difference related to these over consolidate clays, can cause annually shrinkages and swellings, which are sometimes very detrimental (e.g., Houmadi et al, [17] Lamara et al, [20] Medjnoun et al, [26] and Mohanty et al [29] ). The main parameter that causes these changes in volume and water content of unsaturated soils is suction which plays a vital role on soil volumetric behavior.…”
