Caracterização de pequenas criações de caprinos e ovinos da Ilha de São Luís

Abstract

<p>Neste estudo, objetivou-se analisar as características socioeconômicas e zootécnicas em pequenas criações de caprinos e ovinos da Ilha de São Luís no estado do Maranhão. Este trabalho foi realizado em 17 propriedades rurais distribuídas nos 4 municípios da região metropolitana de São Luís, com critério de seleção as propriedades abarcando até 50 animais que se enquadram em pequenas criações. Os criadores receberam informações do estudo e adesão voluntária à pesquisa através da assinatura do termo de consentimento livre e esclarecido e posterior aplicação de um questionário para obtenção de informações gerais, desde as características sociais dos criadores até a forma de criação e manejo aplicado na caprinovinocultura. O tempo médio que os criadores exercem a atividade é de 10 anos, tendo em vista que essa prática foi transmitida por gerações anteriores e assim deixada como herança para as futuras. A criação, em sua maioria, é de subsistência, sendo a atividade mantida como fonte de renda secundária. As propriedades possuem instalações que facilitam o manejo. Em relação às práticas de manejo reprodutivo, o controle da reprodução nos rebanhos é pouco realizado. Para melhorar a nutrição do rebanho, há fornecimento de suplementação mineral, relatado por todos os criadores. Os criadores utilizam pastagem nativa associada ao pasto cultivado como fonte de alimentação e o sistema de criação predominante é o semiextensivo. O principal entrave para a criação é a falta de financiamento, seguido de custo de produção.</p>
