Introduction. The complementary feeding (CF) comprises a period in the life of the infant that starts with the introduction of foods other than breast-milk. It is determined by social and environmental factors which facilitate or limit the appropriate initiation of this practice, directly affecting the nutritional and health status of children. Objective. To identify barriers and facilities for the follow-up of nutritional recommendations regarding the early start of CF in children between 0 and 24 months of age belonging to a comprehensive early childhood care program. Materials and methods. Phenomenological, longitudinal, qualitative study in which 43 in-depth interviews and 11 focus-groups were carried out. Predefined categories were the context of the mother, representations and experiences of gestation, meanings and experiences of breastfeeding (BF), and CF. The analysis included the relationships between the units of meaning and predefined and emerging categories. Results. The CF is a social practice which is the result of medical and popular knowledge mixture, however, the degree of influence that the latter has on mothers is higher due to the degree of support that they have from their close circle, especially from mothers, grandmothers, and women of the family. The lack of conceptual and practical knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and CF prevents mothers from carrying out good practices. Most of them do not know clearly what is involved in the EBF, resulting in an early start of CF, or do not have objective criteria to assess their milk production. Despite having received specific training, CF started early in most cases, a fact in which close family influence was decisive. Conclusions. The CF experience is strongly influenced by sociocultural aspects not only of the mother but of her immediate circle, and the recommendations they received from health professionals are not enough to change their practices. Therefore, it is necessary to improve CF support interventions.

The current retrospective cross-sectional study included 175 Colombian caregivers of children ranging between 24 and 59 months old (M=47.08, SD=7.08) enrolled in childcare centers located in the Caribbean region. 58% of the children are male, and all of them belong to low-income families. Breastfeeding duration ranged between children's 0 to 37 months old (M=10.84, SD=8.48); 64 of them had exclusive breastfeeding for during their first 6 months (i.e., no fed with bottle). Results showed that the variance of Food Responsiveness explained by the model was 2% (R 2 =.02, F(3,161)=1.081, p=.359). Breastfeeding duration did not significantly predict Food Responsiveness (β=-.004, p=.219), as well as age (β=.004, p=.346) and gender (β=.056, p=.354) did not significantly explain the dependent variable. Likewise, Satiety Responsiveness variance was not explained by duration of breastfeeding (β=.002, p=.548), age (β=.003, p=.489), and gender (β=.040, p=.561). Overall, the explained variance was less than 1% (R 2 =.008, F(3,161)= .428, p=.733). Breastfeeding duration does not significantly change the child's likelihood of being unhealthy (β=-.010, p=.616), while being male and getting older increase the odds of being healthy. Future directions and limitations are discussed.

Objetivo: Identificar el nivel de conocimiento y factores demográficos, laborales y familiares asociados con el abandono de la Lactancia Materna Exclusiva (LME) en madres trabajadoras de una institución pública. Metodología: Es un estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal, con 58 madres de niños menores de 3 años, la selección fue no probabilística. Se utilizó una encuesta validada por juicio de expertos y medición de concordancia. Resultados: Las madres tenían entre 25 y 39 años, el 96.6% tenía nivel educativo superior, 84.5% tenía pareja, 55% era madre por primera vez, y en el 50% sus bebes habían nacido por cesárea. Todas tuvieron un óptimo nivel de conocimientos sobre lactancia materna, el 29 habían abandonado la LM y el 97% lo hizo antes de cuatro meses. Las razones del abandono fueron 38%: el trabajo, 24.2%: poca producción de leche y 14% debido al trabajo. El 50% y 79.3% tiene una percepción negativa del apoyo familiar y laboral, respectivamente. Los factores del abandono de la LME fueron la percepción negativa del apoyo del entorno laboral [OR:0.165 (IC 0.032-0,84), p valor: 0.019], mientras que los factores familiares y autoformación relacionada a la orientación sobre LM favorecen la LME (OR: 2.30). Conclusión: El motivo más frecuente para el abandono de la LME fue por el trabajo y la poca producción de leche. La mayoría de madres tuvieron una percepción negativa respecto al apoyo que brinda el entorno laboral.
