Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin in a Driver's License Regranting Program

Abstract: Applying a marker for chronic alcohol abuse such as CDT for driver's license renewal or regranting is a powerful tool. Analysis of data collected over 2.5 years reveals a favorable outcome of the program and a useful cut-off point could be determined.

“…There is limited evidence for the effect of mutant Tf on CDT test results, mainly because of the small number of participants who were enrolled in the evaluation study (2 ). Because Tf variants are common findings (particularly in non-Caucasian populations) (3,4 ), knowledge of the performance of immunonephelometric tests in the presence of Tf mutants is of practical importance. In the present study, we compared the effect of Tf variants on CZE and nephelometric CDT testing.…”

This growing field called Traffic Medicine sometimes uses alcohol biomarkers as tools to monitor the drinking behavior of intoxicated drivers and to ascertain drivers' risk.…”

“…For instance in Italy, after an OWI arrest, the driver's license is confiscated, and the driver must undergo a medical examination which includes testing with alcohol biomarkers in order to regain their driving privileges (Bortolotti et al, 2007). In Belgium, judges have the authority to order the OWI offender to participate in a driver's license re-granting program, and biomarkers are used to monitor adherence to the abstinence program (Maenhout et al, 2012;Maenhout et al, 2014). Sweden also uses a medical review program that ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT 4 links the reductions of biomarker values to the successful completion of interlock programs (Bjerre et al, 2007).…”

“…Currently, CDT is recognized as an independent alcohol marker, with reliable sensitivity and specificity to identify heavy drinking [9]. For over 4.5 years, it has been used in traffic medicine among subjects applying for driver’s license renewal or regranting in Belgium [10]. In addition to effectively estimating alcohol consumption, CDT also provides a novel tool to diagnose alcohol-related diseases.…”
