Carbon-Based Sorbent Coatings for the Determination of Pharmaceutical Compounds by Bar Adsorptive Microextraction

Abstract: Thirteen carbon materials comprising commercial activated carbons and labmade materials (hydrochars and activated carbons) were assayed as enrichment phase in bar adsorptive microextration to monitor trace levels of ten common pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) in environmental water matrices, 2/40 including surface water, sea water, tap water and wastewater. Polar and nonpolar pharmaceuticals were selectedsulfamethoxazole, triclosan, carbamazepine, diclofenac, mefenamic acid, 17α-ethinylestradiol, 17β-estradiol,… Show more

“…Apart from other microextraction approaches such as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) or stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ], bar adsorptive microextraction (BAμE), which was introduced in the last decade, presents several advantages and has shown great simplicity and versatility by allowing the choice of sorbent coating for each particular type of application. Materials such as activated carbons (ACs) prepared from several sources, alumina, silica, cork, polystyrene divinylbenzene (PS-DVB), modified pyrrolidine, silica-based polymers, and nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes have been used, demonstrating great performance as sorbent phases for BAμE technique [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Nevertheless, the preparation and application of new materials with specific sorption characteristics is still very important for particular applications, especially those from ecological sources, such as biomaterial waste.…”

“…In the last decade, bar adsorptive microextraction (BAμE) has been reported as an alternative enrichment technique that uses activated carbons (ACs) as coating sorbent phases and has demonstrated great performance for trace analysis of polar compounds from aqueous media [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. One of the great advantages of BAμE techniques over other microextraction-based methodologies is that the devices are easily lab-made; they can be prepared in any analytical laboratory.…”
