BackgroundTo address the negative effects of desalination plants, CO2 emissions, and discharge of desalination brine, we studied the carbon capture utilization (CCU) process based on metal carbonation via the reuse of desalination brine. In this study, we converted CO2 and simulated desalination brine into metal carbonate using monoethanolamine as an aqueous absorbent. The produced metal carbonate varied according to the cation component of the simulated desalination brine. We focused on ion interactions in the aqueous system, occurred by cation ratio, and other phenomena caused by the interactions.ResultsWe determined that the common ion effect, which occurred owing to the ion interactions of the system, was the main reason for the various carbonation trends. Ionic atmospheres that were changed by the ionic components significantly affected the trends. The high salinity of the desalination brine also affected the metal carbonation. We further deduced that the variation in the results was derived from interactions between the abovementioned effects. And we also found that Na+, which was overlooked in former studies about polymorph transformation, also affects polymorph transformation.ConclusionsAll the phenomena in the metal carbonation interrupt desalination brine post-treatment because of their unpredictability. However, we suggest ambient estimation of its cation components, which would help future studies and demonstrate desalination brine post-treatment.

This article identifies the factors that, according to international experts, will have substantial effects on the future development and commercialisation of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies. A tworound online Delphi study with 15 international experts in the field of CCU enabled us to explore the main items within five impact categories: (1) benefits, (2) risks, (3) future developments, (4) demand, and ( 5) supply constraints. Based on the results of the Delphi study, we constructed 4 future scenarios that represent how the CCU sector could develop within 10 years, using a local scenario development workshop with 9 experts from within Flanders (Belgium) and the Netherlands. We used a deductive, explorative scenario development method, which resulted in a two-by-two scenario matrix. We find that the local experts consider the role of the government and the development of CCU costs to be the most uncertain factors and could have the highest impact on the development of the sector within the next 10 years. Our insights can be instructive for facilitating the process of scenario planning for CCU development activities. Finally, although we work with a regionally specific case study, the same method could be implemented in other regions, using the general findings from our Delphi study as a starting point for the scenario development.

The structural orientation of an amphiphilic crystalline polymer to ah ighly ordered microphase-separated lamellar structure on ah ydrophobic surface is presented. It is formed by the surface graft polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol)behenyl ether methacrylate onto poly(trimethylsilyl) propyne in the presence of allylamine.Inparticular,allylamine playsapivotal role in controlling the crystalline phase, configuration, and permeation properties.T he resulting materials are effectively used to improve the CO 2 capture property of membranes.U pon the optimization of the reaction conditions,ahigh CO 2 permeability of 501 Barrer and aC O 2 /N 2 ideal selectivity of 77.2 are obtained, whichexceed the Robeson upper bound limit.
