Carbon-coated Fe–Co(C) nanocapsules prepared by arc discharge in methane

Abstract: Characterization and magnetic properties of Fe–Co(C) nanocapsules were investigated systematically by means of x-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis, chemical analysis, oxygen determination, and magnetization measurement. The effects of elemental carbon, decomposed from a methane atmosphere in carbon arc process, on the phase structures, magnetic states and surface characterization were studied. Car… Show more

“…In analogy, magnetic graphite core-shell structures have been realized through encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles within thick graphitic shells [3,4] exhibiting magnetic behaviour [5,6] and very good stability [7,8] owing to the resistant carbon shell around the functional particles, targeting applications in electronics, magnetic separations, drug delivery, resonance imaging contrast enhancement, etc. However, recent progress on properties and applications of graphene directs towards minimization of the number of layers yielding structures that are distinguished from their bulk graphite counterparts.…”

“…It may shed some lights on the study of enlarging the family of nanocapsules/nanoparticles. In our previous work [14][15][16], a process of arc-discharge was developed to fabricate magnetic nanocapsules/nanoparticles with different types of shell-core structures by changing either atmosphere or anode material.…”
