Carbon Dioxide Well Stimulation: Part 2 -- Design of Aminoil's North Bolsa Strip Project (includes associated papers 11928 and 12234 )

Abstract: Summary A CO2 stimulation process has been designed for heavy-oilreservoirs. The process will be applied by Aminoil U.S.A. in their North Bolsa Strip lease of the Huntington Beach field. High oil viscosity (177 cp) and severe faulting have caused poor performance in early attemptsto waterflood this reservoir. Each producing well is to be treated with 2 to 10 tons of CO2 per foot of net pay. Gases produced are separated cryogenically to produce saleable hydrocarbons and reusable CO2. The proce… Show more

“…In 1982, Aminoil conducted COz huff 'n' puff operations in the Huntington Beach field, CA. 6 In 1986, Turkish Petroleum Corp. began conducting immiscible COz injection operations in the Bati Raman field, Turkey. 7 , 8 As is often the case with EOR processes in the early years of field testing, the results of these projects are generally inconclusive.…”

“…Application seems to mostly confine itself to low pressure sandstone reservoirs 7 . The process has even been shown to be moderately effective in conjunction with steam on heavy California crude oils 8,9 . A review of earlier literature 5,10,11 provides an excellent discussion on the theory, mechanics of the process, and several case histories.…”
