Carbon Dots as Advanced Drug-Delivery Nanoplatforms for Antiinflammatory, Antibacterial, and Anticancer Applications: A Review

Abstract: Carbon dots (CDs), as rapidly developing nanomaterials, give new prospects for the treatment of various diseases. Their great biocompatibility and wide specific surface area make CDs excellent drug-delivery vehicles because they improve cellular uptake and absorption and allow for medications to bind more easily. CDs offer enormous potential as delivery systems for antiinflammatory medications. The activities of antiinflammatory drugs delivered by CDs are higher than those of free drugs. They also have control… Show more

“…[41] The design and preparation of carbon dots with both antibacterial and immune regulatory functions and their application in implant modification have bright prospects. [42] While, this section is lacking. In this study, GCDs with the average size of 2.4 nm were effectively prepared containing the active groups of −NH 2 , quaternary ammonium, and guanidine.…”

“…Carbon dots (CDs) have been widely used in regenerative medicine due to their unique properties such as easy preparation, high quantum yield (QY) and low toxicity. 134 Carbon dots have been shown to upregulate the expression of osteogenesis-related genes ( ALP , RUNX2 , OCN , BSP ) and enhance stromal differentiation via the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated MAPK pathway, which in turn enhances osteogenic differentiation. 135 In addition, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is critical for promoting osteogenic differentiation.…”

“…ROS is one of the key factors contributing to increased inflammation. 102 Some antimicrobial FCDs avoid side effects from ROS by using other gases such as CO 2 and NO instead of ROS. For example, silica-supported near-infrared carbon dots and bicarbonate nanoplatform (BC/QPCuRC@MSiO 2 @PDA) synergized phototherapy (PPT and PDT) and gas therapy to kill almost all E. aureus and S. aureus under 808 nm laser irradiation.…”
