Carbon Emissions, Agricultural Output and Life Expectancy in West Africa

Abstract: Carbon emissions are basically gaseous substances that are generated from human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, into the atmosphere, and these emissions affect agricultural output and human health. The rising level of carbon emissions into the atmosphere has become a problem worldwide. Thus, this study examined the effect of carbon emissions on agricultural output and life expectancy in West Africa using data that spanned the period between 2000 and 2018. The study employed the two stage least … Show more

“…On the other hand, carbon emissions, released by the burning of fossil fuels, have brought about negative externalities across the globe. This is due to energy usage, especially fossil fuel alongside manufacturing and construction activities has shown a negative impact on the environment in the form of environmental degradation, poor health outcome, and reduced life expectancy, including aquatic life (Matthew et al, 2020;Balan, 2016;Mesagan and Ekundayo, 2015).…”

“…[7], using a dynamic computable general equilibrium model in Ethiopia, find that CO2 emissions negatively affect agricultural productivity and household welfare. Also, [22] find a similar adverse effect of carbon emissions on agricultural output. Further, [23] find higher amounts of rainfall and moderate temperatures to be significant drivers of improved welfare for agricultural workers in northern Ghana based on survey data.…”
