Carbon fiber/epoxy composite materials cured thermally and with microwave irradiation

Abstract: In this paper, composite materials of short carbon fibers (CFs) and a thermosetting epoxy were prepared in three different ways: without curing, thermal curing, and thermal curing followed by microwave irradiation. Mechanical properties of the three kinds of CF reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites were studied to explore the effect of microwave irradiation. Microscopic study with the aid of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was performed on fractured composite surfaces to identify the principle features of … Show more

“…The interfaces accompanied by tighter physical/chemical interactions yield improved mechanical properties of the whole CFRP composites. [ 3 ] Plenty of works endorsing the fiber/matrix interfacial interactions to enhance the composites utility via CF surface modifications have been reported. [ 4 ] CF surface wettability with polymer precursors or sizing agents plays a pivotal role in determining productivity of CFRP composites.…”

“…Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is widely used in the aerospace industry due to its high specific strength and stiffness. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Curing process plays an important role in the process of producing CFRP. Compared with other forming processes, the components produced by the autoclave molding process (AMP) have a uniform resin content and stable mechanical performance.…”
