Carbon Nano-Onion Peroxidase Composite Biosensor for Electrochemical Detection of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T

Abstract: Carbon nano-onions are emerging electrode materials in biosensing due to their high conductivity and biocompatibility. Phenoxy-based herbicides are a source of environmental contamination that can be detected using their property to inhibit the activity of some enzymes. Here we report a biosensor based on peroxidase immobilized on carbon nano-onions in a cyclodextrin polymer matrix for the amperometric detection of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. The inhibition mechanism of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T on peroxidase activity was firs… Show more

“…The resulting current was stored in a paper supercapacitor, amplified, and output by a digital multimeter (DMM) ( Figure 3 a), enabling self-powered sensing and providing a novel idea for the design and development of point-of-care testing equipment. In another study, Sok et al developed a biosensor by fixing carbon nano-onions in a cyclodextrin substrate and depositing the synthesized nano-composite material on a screen-printing electrode [ 39 ]. The presence of 2,4-D could be detected through cyclic voltammetry, as it inhibits horseradish peroxidase and responds to the current.…”

“…In addition, rGO has been envisaged for the detection of pesticides through the immobilization of an esterase on a biocomposite containing fibrin and thrombin, which was assembled taking inspiration form the blood coagulation process [ 245 ]. Finally, CNOs were coupled to a peroxidase in a cyclodextrin polymer matrix for the detection of herbicides, as tested in soil and river water samples [ 238 ].…”

“…The additional layer of nanomaterial that alters the shape and structure of the electrode surface can increase the electrical conductivity and surface area, improving sensitivity. Several carbon-based nanomaterials have been proposed in the literature for electrode surface modification, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, carbon onions, graphene quantum dots, etc., both in their native form and as chemically functionalized derivatives. …”
