Carbon Nanotube‐Based Biosensor

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes, compounded into plastic to create bulk electrodes, form the basis of a novel sensor for biological assays. The nanotubes function as both a solid phase and working electrode for generation of electrochemiluminescence, the detection method used in this system. The Figure shows a scanning electron microscopy image of a composite used for an immunoassay. The bright spots in the image are 10 nm diameter gold colloids covalently attached to antibodies. The inset shows a region of a composite with … Show more

“…Covalent attachment of proteins on carboxylated CNTs using the popular cross-linker 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) was first reported by Huang et al (12) and Jiang et al (13). Since then, it has been widely used in the covalent immobilization of proteins on carboxylated CNTs in biosensing studies (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22).…”

“…Wohlstadter et al [14] used strong acid to etch a densely packed nanotube sheet resulting in the availability of surface carboxylic acid groups. Streptavidin was immobilised on the nanotube sheet by carbodiimide-activated coupling.…”

“…17 A CNT-poly(ethylene vinylacetate) EVA composite was used to develop an immunoassay that detected electrochemiluminescence (ECL). 18 Disks of the nanotube composite were acid oxidized. Subsequently strepavidin was covalently bound and biotinylated anti-a-fetoprotein (AFP) immobilized.…”
