CARBON NANOTUBE-GRAFT-POLY(CITRIC ACID) NANOCOMPOSITES

Abstract: Novel biodegradable nanocomposites containing multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and poly(citric acid) (PCA) were successfully synthesized. For preparation of nanocomposites, MWCNT was opened using a mixture of sulfuric and nitric acid and its derivative containing – COOH and – OH functional groups was obtained. Polycondensation of monohydrate citric acid in the presence of functionalized MWCNT in the melting state was lead to nanotube-graft-poly(citric acid) (CNT-g-PCA) nanocomposites. The degree of polymeri… Show more

“…MWNT-g-PCA was synthesized according to procedures reported in the literature. 26,27 Briefly, 1 g of MWNTs was mixed with 20 mL of concentrated HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 (1:3 ratio), and the mixture was sonicated for 30 minutes and refluxed for 24 hours at 100°C. The resulting black mixture was then diluted with 1 L of distilled water, filtered, and washed with deionized water to adjust the pH to 6.…”

“…Several water-soluble polymers have been covalently and non-covalently attached onto the surface of CNTs to produce modified water-soluble CNT-polymer (Table 1). Depending on the type of conjugated polymer, modified CNTs can be soluble in aqueous or organic solvents, for example, conjugation of polylactide or polycaprolactone onto the surface of CNTs tends to solubilization of CNTs in organic solvents such as chloroform [102,103]. It has been proved that polymers not only raise the functionality, biocompatibility and water solubility of CNT but also are able to change the CNTs conformations dramatically [102][103][104].…”

According to CNTs' polymeric and cationic innate abilities, soluble functionalized carbon nanotubes seem to represent an innovative drug delivery system, since they are capable to penetrate into the cell without altering their morphology [105,106].…”

“…CA has been mainly used as an acidifier, flavoring, and for microbial fermentations for a long time. Besides, CA has been employed as chelating agent for removing heavy metals in soils due to its carboxylic groups [10][11][12]. NPs with high surface to volume ratio and numerous -OH functional groups on their surfaces have a great tendency to aggregate.…”
