Carbon to chlorophyll-a ratio in modeling long-term eutrophication phenomena

Abstract: Carbon to chlorophyll-a ratio (CCHL) is formulated based on the assumption that adaptive changes in carbon to chlorophyll occur so as to maximize the specific growth rate for ambient conditions, including solar radiation and water temperature. With the dynamic CCHL, an unsteady two-layered, two-dimensional eutrophication numerical model for density stratified coastal waters has been developed. Saturated light intensity (IS) is determined as weighted average of the light intensity for previous three days to inc… Show more

“…THAP resulted in a significant reduction of pollutant loading which in turn improved the water quality. Moreover, both field and process-based modeling efforts have been made to address the eutrophication phenomenon and dissolved oxygen dynamics in Tolo Harbour (e.g., Chan and Hodgkiss, 1987;Chau and Jin, 1998;Jin et al, 1998;Chau, 2004;Chau, 2005;Xu et al, 2004).…”

“…Untreated sewage is discharged in an expeditious rate and large quantities of various pollutants have been released, largely via five outlets, namely, Hu men, Jiao men, Hongqi men, Heng men, and Shenzhen River. The water quality within the delta has been deteriorating and the frequency of the occurrence of algae blooms has been increasing Sin and Chau, 1992;Jin et al, 1998).…”
