“…During the Messinian the Mediterranean area was affected by the deposition of huge volumes of evaporites, preserved both in wedge-top basins and in deep basinal areas (Hsu et al, 1973), and this particular paleoenvironmental condition is commonly known as Messinian salinity crisis (MSC) (Rouchy & Caruso, 2006;Cosentino et al, 2013;Roveri et al, 2014). The onset of MSC is commonly marked by the deposition of peculiar carbonates, named "Calcare di Base", including various stratigraphic successions describing the passage between normal marine conditions to evaporitic beds (Vai, 1989;Guido et al, 2007;Lugli et al, 2007), but their depositional environment is still debated (Manzi et al, 2011;Dela Pierre et al, 2012;Gindre-Chanu et al, 2020).…”
