Carbonate-Hydroxyapatite Cement: The Effect of Composition on Solubility In Vitro and Resorption In Vivo

Abstract: The rate of resorption of calcium phosphate self-hardening materials for bone regeneration can be changed by changing the phase composition. The Ca3(PO4)2/CaCO3/Ca(H2PO4)2·H2O/Na2HPO4·12H2O system is important for the synthesis of self-curing bioactive materials with variable resorption rates by changing the ratios of the initial components. Cement compositions in twelve figurative points of a four-component composition diagram at a fixed content in the α-Ca3(PO4)2 system were studied with XRD, FTIR, SEM, calo… Show more

“…The S3 sample presents a heterogeneous microstructure due to the complex filler system based on both TCP and nano HA mediated by chitosan additive, a fact supported by the EDX spectrum in Figure 6 d. Thus, two types of grains appear: polyhedral grains with very fine and compact microstructure inside them (these belong to the nano HA mixture with the polymer matrix, a fact sustained by the HA crystallites measured from the XRD pattern) and the clustered microstructure typical for TCP based on rounded clusters of about 3 ± 1.8 μm that are very well attached to the neighboring grains because of chitosan mediation between filler particles and UDMA hydrophobic monomers. The facts agree with the literature data [ 40 , 41 ].…”

“…New studies relating to the Mg alloy coatings for orthopaedic implants are also The crystallinity analysis presented here shows a coating comprising amorphous and distinct crystalline zones. The combination of these phases of ACP, OCP and some pure HA are desired for HA bone cement since these phases stimulate bone reformation in vitro [72,73]. New studies relating to the Mg alloy coatings for orthopaedic implants are also highlighting these ACP, OCP and HA phases as being beneficial for controlled resorption [74,75].…”
