Carbonate preservation history in the Peru Basin: Paleoceanographic implications

Abstract: We studied preservation/dissolution cycles and paleoproductivity in eight sediment cores from the Peru Basin south of the highly productive surface waters of the eastern equatorial Pacific. Stratigraphy is based on stable oxygen isotopes and on combined magnetostratigraphy and biostratigraphy. Sediment cores which span the last 8 m.y., were retrieved during cruise 79 with RV SONNE close to the carbonate compensation depth (CCD). In general, sediments show Pacific‐type carbonate cycles. We interpret a pronounce… Show more

“…Predominantly, siliceous and calcareous muds and oozes make up the sediments in this region (Weber et al, 1995). For detailed site description of the DISCOL area and the disturbance experiment carried out in 1989 please refer to Thiel and Schriever (1990); Boetius (2015); Greinert (2015).…”

“…Unfortunately, the extremely low sedimentation rates and poor carbonate preservation in this area (most of the southeastern Pacific sea floor is deeper than 4000 meters, the approximate present carbonate compensation depth [Weber et al, 1995] problems. In this sense, the present work is devoted to study a core located in the Nazca Ridge at 3120 m water depth and therefore above the present depth of the lysocline.…”
