Carcinoma of the Cervix Uteri in Ibadan: Coital Characteristics

Abstract: Carcinoma of the cervix uteri has been found to be the most common female malignancy in Ibadan, excluding the reticuloendothelial tumors. In a study to investigate associated etiological factors in this environment, it was demonstrated that certain coital characteristics of women with cervical cancer can be identified. These were a common denominator which could explain the frequency of the disease among some categories of patients who engage in early sexual practice, have intercourse frequently and with multi… Show more

“…Many patients abstained from intercourse because of a fear of recurrence, especially in those who had therapeutic doses of radiotherapy and therefore had a good prognosis. It is known that early onset and high frequency of coitus are causative factors for cancer of the cervix (Stern and Dixon, 1961;Rotkin and King, 1962;Boyd and Doll, 1964;Christopherson and Parker, 1965;Adelusi, 1977), but there is no evidence of a relationship between coitus after radiotherapy and recurrence of the malignancy, and patients should be made to realise this, particularly as they may fear that their illness was due to past misdeeds which must not be repeated.…”

“…THE literature contains few reports on the effects of treatment of carcinoma of the cervix on the sexual life of the patient (Huffman, 1950;Vasicka et al, 1958;Decker and Schwartzman, 1962;Abitbol and Davenport, 1974), despite the fact that first coitus at an early age and multiple sexual partners have been implicated in the aetiology of the disease (Adelusi, 1977). This scientific lack of interest may be due to the widespread myth that intercourse is unusual for women beyond the middle age.…”
