Carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses results of a prospective pilot study

Abstract: Sixty patients with paranasal sinus cancer were treated from January 1976 until July 1981 according to a standard protocol in which surgery is combined with a low dose of irradiation and a topically applied cytostatic drug. The local control rate was 65%. Mutilation was clearly reduced. The actuarial 2-year and 5-year survival rate was 76% and 65%, respectively. The actuarial 5-year survival rate for squamous cell carcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma of the maxillary sinus was 52%. For adenocarcinoma of th… Show more

“…32 He also noticed that by this multimodality approach, mutilation was clearly reduced with 2-and 5-year survival rates of 76% and 65%, respectively. Squamous and undifferentiated histologic conditions displayed a 52% 5-year survival rate and adenocarcinomas a 100% 5-year survival rate.…”

“…This consists of surgical debulking followed by topical chemotherapy combined with frequent necrotomy. 12 In the period January 1976 through December 1988, these patients also received low-dose radiotherapy (ie, 2ϫ2 Gy preoperatively and 5ϫ2 Gy postoperatively). However, in consultation with our radiotherapy colleagues it was believed that this low-dose radiotherapy was insufficient to have any influence on the results.…”

“…154,184,185 The use of hyperfractionation 11,142 or neutron beam irradiation 142 does not seem to modify the cure rates drastically. Although the results of a few recent articles that included chemotherapy in the treatment protocol are encouraging, with 5-year survival rates Ͼ 50%, 34,40,136,137,173 it remains unclear whether the addition of chemotherapy to other aggressive treatment regimens provides a clear advantage in local control or survival.…”
