Cardiac arrhythmias in patients with COVID‐19

Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), which has reached pandemic status. Although clinical manifestations in patients with COVID-19 are mainly related to the respiratory system, cardiovascular complications have also been identified in the earliest reported cases from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak. 1-3 COVID-19 can significantly affect cardiac function and induce cardiac injury. And the latter is associ… Show more

“…In the report by Colon et al, 19 out of 119 (16.5%) patients, all admitted in ICU, developed new-onset atrial arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation (63%), atrial flutter (32%) and atrial tachycardia (5%) [ 62 ]. Atrioventricular/ventricular block and QT prolongation have been reported in association with SARS-CoV-2 infection, with incidence of 11.8% and 13% respectively [ 60 ]. Malignant arrhythmias, as ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, have been described as well since early reports from China, especially in patients with elevated TnT levels [ 4 ].…”

“…Arrhythmogenesis appears to be a feature of coronaviruses as these have been reported in SARS and MERS patients. The different forms of dysarrhythmias in coronaviruses infections include branch block, atrial fibrillation, premature beats, QT interval elongation, and even sudden cardiac death ( 34 ). In hospitalized Covid-19 patients, cardiac arrhythmias were noted in 16.7% of patients in a Chinese cohort especially in those in ICU ( 6 ).…”
