“…Although the literature review delineated cases of demyelinating polyneuropathy in chronic myeloid leukemia, chronic lymphatic leukemia and hairy cell leukemia, the pathogenesis is unclear. Whatever the cause we may conclude that autonomic system is affected in leukemias, as announced by Kamath et al (1998).…”

“…One way ANOVA test or Mann-Whitney's U-test was reported (Vernino et al 1998). Kamath et al (1998) showed by using timedomain and frequency-domain parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) that cardiac autonomic functions were impaired in survivors of acute lymhoblastic leukemia in childhood. In addition, the reduction of HRV during vincristine treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia have been reported (Hirvonen et al 1989), and another study revealed that autonomic abnormalities were most prominent in patients in poor clinical condition during the acute phase of acute myeloblastic leukemia (Drzewoski and Zawadzka-Bandura 1992).…”

“…Autonomic dysfunction has been reported in patients with lymphoma, leukaemia and carcinomas of the lung, pancreas, prostate, breast, ovary and testicle (Thomas & Shields ; Mousa & Al‐Din ; Kamath et al . ; Goldsmith & Farmer ; Nelson et al . ; Nuver et al .…”

“…HRV can also be impaired in conditions, which affect the autonomic neural balance, like diabetic neuropathy [13]. Kamath et al [33] found cardiac autonomic dysfunction in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with normal left ventricular indices on echocardiography; they hypothesized this to be due to the neurotoxic effects of vincristine or cranial irradiation. In contrast, we found no HRV impairment in 90 long-term childhood ALL survivors (median follow-up 14.8 years, range 11.4-17.8) who were treated with cranial irradiation and vincristinebased chemotherapy with or without low dose (4 Â 25 mg/ m 2 ) daunorubicin [34].…”
