Cardiac Chamber Volumes, Function, and Mass as Determined by 64-Multidetector Row Computed Tomography

Abstract: This study establishes age- and gender-specific values for LV, RV, LA, and RA size, function, and mass in adults free of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and obesity using 1D, 2D, and 3D methods. These data can be used as a reference for future MDCT studies.

“…Until recently, even a reference value had not been established for RA size. 22 As revealed in the current investigation, RA volume and LA size were more increased in patients with PeAF than in subjects with PaAF. Thus, it can be said that the severity of RA anatomical remodeling, along with LA enlargement, is correlated with the chronicity of AF.…”

“…11,23,24 LVEF was calculated using end-diastole and end-systole volumes and LVEF Ͻ50% was considered abnormal. 11,25 Patient Follow-Up Patient follow-up for all-cause mortality was performed by each local institution by telephone interview, with validation of reported death through medical records whenever possible and/or a national death registry.…”

“…Indeed, inconsistent data derived from small populations have been reported, indicating that LVEF decreases or remains unchanged with age and is not influenced by gender. 7,8 Knowledge of these parameters, however, is crucial in order to stratify risk and guide therapy of patients with CAD. Thus, given the prognostic importance of LV function and its routine use in clinical decision making, the aim of this study was to assess age-and gender-specific changes of LV dimensions and systolic function by 64-slice cardiac CT in a large international multicenter cohort.…”
