Abstract: Hypothermic incubation of chicken eggs leads to smaller embryos with enlarged hearts, originally described as hypertrophic. Over the years, however, accumulated evidence suggested that hyperplasia, rather than hypertrophy, is the predominant mechanism of cardiac growth during the prenatal period.
