“…Simulation enables learners to practice technical skills unique to cardiac surgery while gaining direct exposure to and an appreciation for the art of cardiac surgery. More recent literature is now showing how simulation training modalities increased engagement with and knowledge of cardiac surgery procedures [65]. A high faculty-to-learner ratio and hands-on experiences were among some of the factors that contributed to learner satisfaction with simulation training [65].…”

“…In the growing body of research pertaining to simulation in cardiac surgery, the focus has traditionally been on developing tools that could augment the limited educational opportunities that exist in the clinical realm. 1 , 2 , 3 In this important study by Rabenstein and colleagues, 4 a new paradigm has been introduced whereby the value proposition for cardiac surgical simulation extends to the recruitment of new trainees.…”

“…In this study, the authors 1 have tried to demonstrate how simulation can foster interest in cardiothoracic surgery (CTS). They report positive subjective feedback from participating residents who felt that such exercises enhanced their skills and understanding of CTS.…”

“… 2 The American Board of Surgery requires no cardiac cases and only 20 thoracic cases for GS certification. 1 This lack of exposure to cardiac surgery may be the reason for the decreased interest in those GS residents who previously may have been undecided with respect to their choice of subspecialty. It would be wise to take advantage of the flexible rotation option, provided by the American Board of Surgery, which allows program directors to customize 12 months (≤6 months/year) in the last 3 years of GS training to allow for “early tracking” into the resident's subspecialty of choice.…”
