Cardiac Tamponade by Hydatid Pericardial Cyst: A Rare Case Report

Abstract: IntroductionHydatid cysts are most commonly found in the liver and lungs but they are rarely found in pericardium.Case PresentationWe present a rare case of isolated hydatid cyst in pericardium of heart of a 70 year old female presented in casualty with unusual features like, dyspnea, palpitation and chest pain mimicking acute coronary syndrome.DiscussionHydatid cyst in Pericardium represents only 0.5-2% of cases of systemic echinoccocal infection. Isolated pericardial cyst is very rare in endemic region and m… Show more

“…They tend to expand inside the right ventricular cavity and in the subendocardial space and are more prone to rupture, which can lead to pulmonary embolism, anaphylaxis and sudden death. Left ventricular hydatid cysts grow as subepicardial masses and rarely rupture in the pericardial space [19,20] .The endocardium is easily invaded by hydatid cyst for the obvious reason that endocardium does not give inflammatory reaction like the pericardium [21] . Septal cyst can cause atrioventricular (AV) block by conduction disturbance [22] .…”

“…Generally, the symptoms of the hydatid cyst only occur when the cyst expands. Patient symptoms can include allergic reactions [24] , heart failure [25] , exertional angina [26] , arrhythmias [27] , heart block [20,28] , cardiac tamponade [21] and sudden death [29] .…”

“…Given the progressive impairment of renal function in patients suffering from ADPKD, it is imperative to assess kidney function in patients with pericardial cysts who are suspected of having ADPKD before surgery [13]. Although pericardial hydatid cysts are rare, elevated levels of immunoglobulin E, the presence of eosinophilia and increased serum levels of liver enzymes suggest the diagnosis of hydatid cyst in high-risk patients with intrathoracic cysts [14].…”
