Cardiogenic shock among cancer patients

Abstract: Sophisticated cancer treatments, cardiovascular risk factors, and aging trigger acute cardiovascular diseases in an increasing number of cancer patients. Among acute cardiovascular diseases, cancer treatment, as well as the cancer disease itself, may induce a cardiogenic shock. Although increasing, these cardiogenic shocks are still relatively limited, and their management is a matter of debate in cancer patients. Etiologies that cause cardiogenic shock are slightly different from those of non-cancer patients,… Show more

“…Physical stressors have also been identified, most notably of neurologic origin, such as stroke, cerebral bleeding or cerebral concussion ( 1 ). Finally, some recently-published data also suggested a link between an oncologic process and TTS, as almost 10% of TTS patients seem to develop cancer in a 4-year follow-up ( 20 ). MS however has only been identified as the trigger of TTS in a few case reports across the scientific literature ( 5 , 11 , 12 , 16 ), and even less so as the trigger of reverse TTS ( 7 , 8 , 10 , 11 , 21 27 ).…”

“…Myocarditis leading to cardiogenic shock may also be a consequence of cancer therapy. 5 The use of the antimetabolite 5-fluoracil or high doses of cyclophosphamide may rarely lead to myocarditis, but more recently the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) has been associated with fulminant myocarditis in up to 1% of cases, with high fatality rate of 50%. 6 In…”
