Cardioprotective Potential of Berries of Schisandra chinensis Turcz. (Baill.), Their Components and Food Products

Abstract: Schisandra chinensis (S. chinensis) berries, originally a component of traditional herbal medicine in China, Korea, and other east Asian countries, are also valuable agents in modern phototherapy. S. chinensis berry preparations, including extracts and their chemical components, demonstrate anti-cancer, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, among others. These valuable properties, and their therapeutic potential, are conditioned by the unique chemical composition of S. chinensis berr… Show more

“…It was first recorded in the Shennong Herbal Classic, and it is esteemed for its liver-protective properties. In recent years, pharmacological investigations have unveiled Schisandra lignans’ multifaceted benefits, including enhanced learning and memory capabilities ( Olas, 2023 ), anti-inflammatory actions ( Lee et al, 2022 ), antioxidant effects ( Nowak et al, 2019 ), and more. Schisandra chinensis lignans exhibit neuroprotective attributes by mitigating the expression of phosphorylated tau proteins, abating neuroinflammation arising from overactive microglial cells ( Giau et al, 2018 ; Yang et al, 2019 ), fostering cellular proliferation, and inhibiting apoptosis ( Zhang et al, 2018a ).…”

“…In the preliminary stages, we detected 10 kinds of lignan components of Schisandra chinensis could be detected in the plasma of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) rats ( Wei et al, 2019a ). On this basis, we carried out further research on the lignan components of Schisandra chinensis and consulted relevant literature ( Chen et al, 2018 ; Chen et al, 2019 ; Olas, 2023 ). Through our investigation, we identified a total of 15 components: deoxyschisandrin, schisandrin B, schisandrin C, schisandrol A, schisandrol B, schisantherin A, schisantherin B, gomisin D, angeloylgomisin H, angeloylgomisin Q, gomisin G, gomisin K, schisanhenol, benzoylgomisin H, and gomisin J.…”

“…Edible berries are an important component of the human diet, serving as a source of nutrients and bioactive compounds. They contain a variety of phytochemicals that exhibit a wide range of biological properties, including cardioprotective activity (Olas, 2017(Olas, , 2018(Olas, , 2023Sławińska et al, 2023;Sławińska & Olas, 2022).
