Cardiopulmonary bypass simulation at the Boot Camp

Abstract: This Boot Camp session introduced residents early in their training to aortic cannulation, principles and management of cardiopulmonary bypass, and crisis management. Based on a modular approach, technical skills and knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass can be acquired and assessed by using simulations, but further work with more comprehensive educational modules and practice will accelerate the path to mastery of these critical skills.

“…A range of low-fidelity and high-fidelity models have been considered for use [2][3][4], including simple to lifelike synthetic models, explant tissues, and cadaver or animal tissues. An annual "boot camp" has been established to provide CT fellows an opportunity to train on available models [5,6]. Although not quantified in the literature, it is clear that trainees entering CT surgery have variable baseline technical skills.…”

“…3,4 Current simulators in this field, such as the high-fidelity Ramphal cardiac surgery simulator, 5 focus more on the procedural elements and are used to teach thoracic residents the specific surgical tasks of cardiopulmonary bypass and coronary artery bypass grafting in a realistic tissue environment. Recently, Burkhart et al 6 described their experience with a simulation of cardiopulmonary bypass from a perfusion point of view.…”

“…Recently, Burkhart et al 6 described their experience with a simulation of cardiopulmonary bypass from a perfusion point of view. Hicks et al 4 recently published data regarding the use of multiple simulated environments at the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association (TSDA) Boot Camp. Procedural elements were focused upon during these sessions as were the intraoperative management of issues related to the cardiopulmonary circuit.…”
