Cardiopulmonary fitness in a sample of Malaysian population.

Abstract: Lung capacity and maximum oxygen uptake (V02 max) were measured directly in 167 healthy males, from all the main races in Malaysia. Their ages ranged from 13 to 59 years. They were divided into five age groups (A to E), ranging from the second to the sixth decade. Lung capacities were determined using a dry spirometer and Voz max was taken as the maximum rate of oxygen consumption during exhaustive exercise on a cycle ergometer. Mean forced vital capacity (FVC) was 3.3 + 0.51 and it correlated negatively with … Show more

“…Recently, well-designed studies that measured CRF directly using the treadmill test have been published for relatively large populations, especially for Westerners [12][13][14]. Although there have been attempts to present age-related mean reference values for Asian populations [24,[27][28][29], these studies also had small sample sizes and/or used cycle ergometers instead of the treadmill test.…”

“…sepak takraw players were within Malaysian population norms. 10 When compared to body weights of players from other sports (in order to provide us with a picture of where sepak takraw players rank in terms of anthropometry and physiological capabilities), the mean weight of the U23 players was found to be lower than that of Italian 15 and Indian 11 badminton players. The sepak takraw players also appear somewhat leaner and less muscular.…”

“…For this the subjects were required to cycle on an ergometer at 60 RPM until exhaustion. During this test, the initial workload was set at 50 Watts and it was increased by 16 Watts every minute until the subject reached volitional exhaustion, i.e., was unable to maintain a pedaling speed of 60 RPM in a neutral environment (Ta: 24.2Ϯ0.18°C, rh: 66.4Ϯ1.4%) (Singh et al, 1989). From the data obtained in the submaximal exercise test and the VO 2max test, the workload which would elicit 40% VO 2max of a subject was calculated.…”
