Cardiorespiratory and hemodynamic responses during repetitive incremental lifting and lowering in healthy males and females

Abstract: The purposes of this study were twofold. First, to evaluate the cardiorespiratory and muscle oxygenation (OXY)/blood volume (BV) responses during repetitive incremental lifting and lowering (RILL) in healthy males and females. Second, to develop a predictive equation for predicting peak aerobic power (VO(2peak)) during RILL from the cardiorespiratory, OXY/BV and body composition variables. Fourteen males and 18 females [mean (SD) for age, height and body mass were: 29.6 (8.2) years; 1.75 (0.07) m; 78.9 (10.4) … Show more

“…15 Specifically, trends for muscle blood volume and oxygenation were similar among groups and sides ( Figure 1). The observed muscle oxygenation trend was similar to that of the vastus lateralis muscle during other incremental activities.…”

“…A more detailed description of the repetitive incremental lifting and lowering protocol can be found elsewhere. 15 A portable metabolic analyzer (VmaxST, SensorMedics Corp., Yorba Linda, CA) was used to measure breath-by-breath cardiorespiratory responses. 21 The flowmeter was calibrated using a 3-L syringe of air.…”

“…Near infrared spectroscopy is a valid (Mancini et al 1994;Tran et al 1999), reliable (Kell et al 2004;Maikala et al 2000), and non-invasive optical technique used to measure regional changes in muscle blood volume (Mbv) and oxygenation (Mox) in the microcirculation (i.e., arterioles, capillaries, and venules) (Chance et al 1992) during both dynamic (Chance et al 1992;Kell et al 2003) and static (Maikala and Bhambhani 2000;McGill et al 2000) muscle contraction. The optical technique is based on the differential absorption properties of chromophores, namely oxyhemoglobin (Hb) and myoglobin (Mb) in the near infrared range of 700 and 1,000 nm (Chance et al 1992).…”
