Cardiovascular and Immune Responses to Acute Psychological Stress in Young and Old Women

Abstract: NK cell changes and HR responses induced by acute stress in women are regulated, to some extent, by the same mechanisms. Neither the type of stressor nor age seem to be very important when considering correlations between NK cell and cardiovascular changes. This study integrates information about NK cell and cardiovascular responses in women that can be used as reference material in future studies.

“…In patients with coronary heart disease, mental-stress-induced myocardial ischaemia is more frequent in people who show exaggerated blood pressure and heart rate responses to mental stress tests [45]. Individual differences in cardiovascular stress responsivity are also correlated with the magnitude of acute increases in the number of circulating natural killer cells [46].…”

“…The GSST has been found to elicit significant changes in heart rate and in the HPA-system (Benschop et al, 1998;Van der Pompe et al, 1998). During the GSST, heart rate was recorded continuously.…”

“…Previous studies examining heart rate in stressful situations find heart rates that range from 75 to 90 in laboratory situations. 41 Such situations include mental arithmetic at 75 bpm 42 ; negative feedback during a laboratory task at 87 bpm 43 ; videotaped speech and problem solving at 79 bpm 44 and 87 bpm 45 ; and couple discussions of marital conflict at 90 bpm. 46 In a highstress study examining first-time tandem parachute jumps, bpm reached 140.…”
