Cardiovascular Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Update

Abstract: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) suffer significantly increased cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality when compared to the general population. Both traditional CV risk factors and high levels of systemic inflammation have been linked to the increased CV risk in RA patients, but significant uncertainty remains regarding the mechanisms through which these factors contribute to CVD. In addition, ongoing questions remain regarding how best to identify RA patients at high risk for CVD, and what primary… Show more

“…Care gaps might be due to under‐recognition and under‐assessment of CV risk in RA patients as well as a lack of care coordination between primary care physicians (PCPs) and rheumatologists . These studies raise the question whether under‐treatment of traditional CV risk factors may contribute to the increased CV burden in RA . However, most of these studies are limited by small sample size , the lack of a comparison group , or no access to laboratory test results and blood pressure measurements to confirm under‐treatment .…”

“…Studies confirm the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in RA [4][5][6][7]. The cardiovascular complications-beside renal and pulmonary ones -are important in the mortality of SSc patients as well [8][9][10].…”

“…Interestingly, in addition to being an indicator of frailty, grip strength has been shown to be a predictor of a wide range of adverse health outcomes 53 , e.g., cardiovascular disease, which RA patients are at increased risk of developing 54 and that are impacted by the microbiome 49,55 . Thus, to address whether the protection afforded by ES-62 is associated modulation of the gut microbiota, a metagenomic approach was used to profile the bacterial populations present in the intestines of CIA-mice, exposed or not to ES-62.…”
