Cardiovascular disease in women: insights from magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract: The presentation and identification of cardiovascular disease in women pose unique diagnostic challenges compared to men, and underrecognized conditions in this patient population may lead to clinical mismanagement. This article reviews the sex differences in cardiovascular disease, explores the diagnostic and prognostic role of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in the spectrum of cardiovascular disorders in women, and proposes the added value of CMR compared to other imaging modalities. “…The women in CMR section of the SCMR has led various educational and advocacy initiatives to promote improved cardiovascular care of females with cardiovascular diseases. The group has recently published a comprehensive review paper highlighting the advantages of CMR for imaging cardiovascular disease in women [ 14 ]. Building on this initiative, the SCMR Consensus Group on CMR Imaging for Female Patients with Cardiovascular Disease was formed to provide guidance for current clinical CMR utilization for this purpose.…”

“… [29] As with PET, CMR may be useful as a noninvasive imaging study for patients with suspected coronary microvascular angina, which may be especially important for women. [122] CMR assesses ventricular mass, volume, and systolic function, and can be used to assess valvular heart disease and cardiac remodeling. [123] CMR can visualize cardiomyopathies, such as restrictive, hypertrophic, and dilated cardiomyopathies.…”
