Cardiovascular effects of Teucrium polium L. extract in rabbit

Abstract: Background:Teucrium polium L. (TP) have been used in herbal medicine for different purposes such as antispasmodic, antidiabetic and lowering blood lipid. In the present study, the impact of aqueous-ethanol extract of TP on blood pressure, heart rate and intraventricular pressure was investigated in rabbit.Materials and Methods:Twenty-four NWZ rabbits weighed (2-3 kg) were randomly divided into four groups. In each experiment, two groups of six rabbits received jugular injection of either TP extract (20, 40 and… Show more

“…Furthermore, the plant owns hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, insulinotropic, antinociceptive, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties (Gharaibeh et al, 1988;Tariq et al, 1989;rasekh et al, 2001;abdollahi et al, 2003;Couladis et al, 2003;Yazdanparast, 2004 andmousavi et al, 2012). Tp also affects the cardiovascular system (Niazmand et al, 2011), diminishes body weight (Suleiman et al, 1988), and protects against hepatotoxicity induced by acetaminophen (Kalantari et al, 2013). It has been demonstrated that Tp extract possesses antiamnesic properties in a mouse model of amnesia induced by scopolamine (Orhan & aslan, 2009).…”

“…NO and prostacyclin are endothelium-derived relaxing factors. [ 29 30 ] L-NAME as an inhibitor of NO production attenuated the relaxant effect of the extract at concentration of 1 mg/ml that shows the relaxant effect of the extract on this concentration is dependent to NO pathway.…”

“…These results support our previous study which demonstrated the hypotensive effect of TP extract. [ 30 ] Since TP extract showed inotropic and chronotropic effect,[ 27 30 ] it seems TP could be considered as a candidate for treatment of congestive heart failure as it is used traditionally in some parts of Iran.…”

“…Then, it was left to dry at room temperature in a dry and dark room. 300 g of the plant was soaked in ethanol (50%) for 48 h. Then, it was evaporated and filtrated at 40°C for 72 h. The dried extract was dissolved in distilled water to make various concentrations 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/ml [ 14 , 16 ].…”
