Cardiovascular Health and Incident Hypertension in Blacks

Abstract: Several modifiable health behaviors and health factors that comprise the Life’s Simple 7, a cardiovascular health metric, have been associated with hypertension risk. We determined the association between cardiovascular health and incident hypertension in the Jackson Heart Study, a cohort of African-Americans. We analyzed participants without hypertension or cardiovascular disease at baseline (2000–2004) who attended ≥1 follow-up visit in 2005–2008 or 2009–2012 (n=1878). Body mass index, physical activity, die… Show more

“…Also, higher levels of physical fitness were associated with a lower risk for developing hypertension in whites, but not blacks. Given the steep increase in weight occurring among black young adults as they grew older, previously reported in the CARDIA study, and the association between BMI and incident hypertension in the JHS, primordial prevention aimed at reducing BMI may be particularly effective 32, 33…”

“…Also, higher levels of physical fitness and adherence to DASH diet have been associated with reductions in BP and lower risk for hypertension among blacks and whites 30, 31. In the JHS (Jackson Heart Study), a cohort comprised exclusively of blacks, higher BMI and physical inactivity and a less heart healthy diet were all modifiable health behaviors associated with an increased risk for incident hypertension 32. In the current study, parental history of hypertension and higher BMI, serum uric acid level, and baseline SBP/DBP were each associated with developing hypertension in blacks and whites.…”

“…Regarding the various ways that smartphones or tablets may help people, participants with a self-reported history of hypertension were less likely to report that their smartphones and tablets helped them reach a health-related goal like quitting smoking, losing weight, or increasing physical activity. This finding is notable, given that lifestyle behaviors can help people manage hypertension [41] and that tracking behaviors is a common feature of many health apps [42].…”

“…Other quality control measures included technician certification, recertification and procedural checklists [23]. As previously described, the random-zero sphygmomanometer used for BP measurements in Exam 1 was calibrated to the semiautomatic oscillometric device (Omron HEM-907XL; Omron Healthcare Inc., Lake Forest, Illinois, USA) [24] used for BP measurements at JHS Exams 2 (2005–2008) and 3 (2009–2013). To calibrate BP across two devices, a comparability substudy was conducted.…”
