Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Physical Activity for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases in the Elderly

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases create an important burden on the public health systems, especially in the elderly, mostly because this group of patients frequently suffer from multiple comorbidities. Accumulating cardiovascular risk factors during their lifetime has a detrimental effect on an older adult‘s health status. The modifiable and non-modifiable cardiovascular risk factors are very diverse, and are frequently in a close relationship with the metabolic comorbidities of the elderly, mainly obesity and Diabetes… Show more

“…Few studies have examined the long-term effects of smoking on arterial stiffness, and the available information is inconclusive at best. " (Ciumărnean et al, 2021). There was no significant change in baseline brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity between chronic smokers and nonsmokers in Kim et alstudy, .…”

“…Obesity is associated with a higher risk of falling in aged populations, 32 and is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. 33 However, the potential for loss of bone mineral density and muscle mass associated with weight loss/reduced caloric intake is an important consideration in older adults. In a randomized control trial of a food-based weight loss intervention in patients with obesity aged at least 60 years, the group prescribed a higher proportion of protein in their diet lost a similar amount of weight as the control group, however, had improved physical function (lower-body strength, balance and gait speed) at 6 months.…”

“…It is widely known that PA positively influences quality of life, improving physical and mental fitness and, consequently, may also reduce the emergence and development of CVDs [ 119 ]. CVDs are commonly characterized by glucose metabolic syndrome, oxidative stress and inflammation, whilst PA is known to improve redox status, insulin sensitivity and endothelial function [ 100 ].…”
