Aim To explore nurses' perceptions on caring for children and adolescents who are victims of domestic violence, medical treatment of a victim of domestic violence and social aspects of recognizing this problem. Background Nurses are often first to recognize family violence; thus, they must have appropriate knowledge, skills and experience. Caring for child victims of domestic violence can be very stressful and emotional and nurses must have support when caring for them. Methods A qualitative study was conducted between June and August 2020. Interviews were conducted with paediatric nurses in a university hospital in Slovenia. Interviews were transcribed, coded and synthesized. Results We identified four main categories: violence against children; nurses' perception of caring for a child victim of domestic violence; medical treatment of a child who is a victim of domestic violence; the social aspect of recognizing violence against a child. Conclusions Domestic violence is present regardless of country, language and nationality. Early interventions should be directed towards recognition of the signs of domestic violence and care for victims of violence and caregivers. Implications for Nursing Management It is the responsibility of healthcare systems, hospital managers and nurses themselves to provide nursing care for children and adolescent victims of domestic violence based on the newest and best evidence.

Introdução: O consumo abusivo de drogas por adolescentes configura-se como um problema de saúde pública. Objetivos: Descrever a percepção de adolescentes do sexo feminino acerca da reação dos pais ao descobrirem sobre o uso de drogas; e a influência da família e amigos nesse consumo. Materiais e Métodos: Estudo exploratório descritivo, de natureza qualitativa. Constituíram-se como participantes adolescentes do sexo feminino que estavam acolhidas em uma comunidade terapêutica para usuárias de drogas. A coleta de dados se deu em abordagem individual, por meio de uma entrevista em local reservado, seguindo-se um roteiro semiestruturado elaborado pelas autoras, que abordava dados sociodemográficos e questões sobre o uso de substâncias psicoativas. A avaliação dos dados se deu por meio da análise de conteúdo temático-categorial. Resultados: Foi possível estabelecer quatro categorias temáticas: 1) reação dos pais ao descobrirem o consumo de drogas por suas filhas; 2) delegação do papel familiar ao Estado; 3) influência das amizades e 4) influência do contexto familiar. Conclusões: Considera-se que os pais se utilizam da agressividade para lidar com a descoberta do uso ou recorrem ao Estado para providências e que as relações sociais influenciaram no uso de substâncias das participantes.

Violence in the community can impact access to health care. This scoping review examines the impact of urban violence upon youth (aged 15–24) access to sexual and reproductive health and trauma care in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). We searched key electronic health and other databases for primary peer-reviewed studies from 2010 through June 2020. Thirty five of 6712 studies extracted met criteria for inclusion. They were diverse in terms of study objective and design but clear themes emerged. First, youth experience the environment and interpersonal relationships to be violent which impacts their access to health care. Second, sexual assault care is often inadequate, and stigma and abuse are sometimes reported in treatment settings. Third is the low rate of health seeking among youth living in a violent environment. Fourth is the paucity of literature focusing on interventions to address these issues. The scoping review suggests urban violence is a structural and systemic issue that, particularly in low-income areas in LMICs, contributes to framing the conditions for accessing health care. There is a gap in evidence about interventions that will support youth to access good quality health care in complex scenarios where violence is endemic.
